    • 1). Open the windows, if possible, to ventilate the area, or turn on the fan above the cooktop. This will help disperse any gas that may escape while you are working.

    • 2). Turn off the electrical supply for the gas cooktop. Most cooktops will be connected to the electrical supply in one of two ways: either a standard electrical plug or hard wired into the home circuit from below. Remove the plug from the socket on stoves so equipped. For hard-wired cooktops, cut the electricity for the cooktop circuit at the main circuit breaker.

    • 3). Locate the gas supply cut off valve, which should also be located beneath the cooktop. Most knobs will have an arrow that indicates the direction they should be rotated to cut the supply.

    • 4). Use a wrench to loosen the coupling connecting the top of the supply line to the inlet on the cooktop by turning it counterclockwise. This inlet may be on the front, side or back of the cooktop, depending on the model.

    • 5). Follow the supply line down to where it meets the gas supply valve. Loosen the coupling at this end by turning it counterclockwise with a wrench.

    • 6). Apply pipe thread compound to the threads above the gas supply valve.

    • 7). Screw on a pipe cap. Tighten with a wrench.
