How to Write a Check for More Than $1,000
- 1). Open your checkbook to the first blank check available. Using a pen -- never a pencil -- enter the date at the top right hand corner of your check on the line titled "Date".
- 2). Write the name of the person or business receiving your payment on the line marked "Pay to the Order of". Write the full name of the recipient, such as "Joe Smith", rather than "Joe" or "Joe S." Businesses sometimes allow you to abbreviate the title of the company; Alphabet County Utilities might accept checks made out to "ACU", for example.
- 3). Enter the numerical dollar amount of your check in the box immediately to the right of the "Pay to the Order of" line. If you are writing a check for $1,500 you will write "1,500.00" in the box.
- 4). Write out the amount of your check on the line followed by the phrase "Dollars". For example, you will write "one thousand five hundred and no/100 dollars".
- 5). Sign your name to the bottom right side of your check. You must sign your full name as it appears on your check.
- 6). Use the line on the bottom left of your check to write any additional information. For example, if the check being written is to pay your mortgage bill for the month you should write your mortgage account number on this line.
