    • 1). Drain the fuel and oil mix from the fuel tank using a drain pan. Open the tank, turn the trimmer upside down and allow the fuel and oil to drain into the drain pan. Fill the tank of the gas trimmer with a mixture of fuel and engine oil. The mixture should contain 1 gallon of gasoline for every 4 oz. of oil. Mix the fuel and oil in a bucket before pouring it into the tank.

    • 2). Turn the switch to the "On" position. If the trimmer still refuses to start, turn the switch back to the "Off" position. Place your hand on the primer bulb and depress the bulb fully six times.

    • 3). Adjust the carburetor using a screwdriver, if the engine will not idle. Tighten the carburetor slightly by turning all of its screws clockwise by about 90 degrees.

    • 4). Turn off the trimmer, if the engine will not accelerate. Clean the head of the trimmer by rinsing it with water.

    • 5). Clean the cutting head with a damp towel. Examine the cutting head, if its line will not advance. If the cutting head is not properly aligned, refill it with a new line. If the inner reel is improperly bound, replace it.
