Labiaplasty - What in God"s Name Is That?

Labiaplasty (sometimes spelled "labioplasty") has been characterized by the media in broad predominately negative strokes.
It has been mis-characterized more commonly than it has been reasonably presented for the most part.
In 2004, Cosmopolitan magazine quoted a gynecologist in at least one issue stating that it was one of the worst things a woman could do to her body.
As the variations in the surgery by different surgeons are enormous, there are equally varied results.
Some renditions of the operation offer much more favorable results than others.
What Exactly Is Labiaplasty? Most surgeons define labiaplasty as surgery of the external genitalia of a woman.
Most commonly the operation involves reducing the size of the Labia minora, the "inner vaginal lips.
" The operation can also extend to the Labia majora (the outer lips) but we will not cover this here.
Why Would A Woman Want To Do This? The usual reasons women cite as motivation to consider such an operation include embarrassment with the size of their Labiae.
In some cases the size can be uncomfortable in tight clothing and in more extreme cases the size can interfere with sexual activity.
In still other cases women desire cosmetic refinement of their genitalia for personal reasons.
How Can It Be Done? There are many ways this can be accomplished, but the two most common techniques are named the "Trim" and "Wedge" procedures.
The Trim is a simple operation in which the unwanted portion of the Labia minora is simply cut off and sutures are used to close the wound.
As in many other areas in life, "simple" does not necessarily translate to "better.
" The advantages of the Trim procedure include that it is easy to teach and learn and can easily be performed under local anesthesia.
Amongst the disadvantages are the facts that pain after surgery can be severe and longstanding and it is common for "too much to be removed" leaving a relatively unnatural appearance afterward.
This is the most commonly performed version of labiaplasty surgery at present.
The Wedge operation entails removal of a "pie shaped" piece of the labia.
This tends to leave the appearance of the remaining "lip" looking very natural.
This operation is harder to learn and is easier to perform under more involved anesthesia.
The sensation of the remaining tissue is normal in the vast majority of cases again if the operation is done well.
Wedge patients tend to return to physical and sexual activity earlier than Trim patients.
In discussing these procedures we again emphasize that the exact nature of the surgery varies in the hands of different surgeons.
Many patients enjoy good results with their surgery.
In the hands of the novice surgeon however, labiaplasty surgery can produce discomfort and long standing problems.
