Passing a Glass Through a Card
Passing a Glass Through a Card
This “effect” is probably more of a stunt or bar trick challenge as opposed to being an easy magic trick, but it’s based on a fun concept. Once you know the secret, you can apply this principle to business cards, sheets of paper and more and effectively change the trick. It’s all up to your creativity and imagination.
Effect:
You bring out an ordinary playing card and tell your spectators that you will cut a hole in the card in such a manner that you can pass a drinking glass or coffee mug through its center.
This one is not a penetration effect in the classic magic sense as you are physically altering the playing card so that the drinking glass or coffee mug can pass through. Once you pass the object through, there’s no question how this was accomplished.
You don’t have to use a drinking glass or coffee mug. Just experiment with the concept and choose the object that you wish to employ. By the way, with a sheet of paper, you can apply the same principle and make your entire body pass through the center of the hole.
Materials:
A normal playing card that you can ruin
A drinking glass, coffee mug, or a disposable cup
Scissors
Skills Required:
None
Making the Cut
All you have to do is look at the picture and you’ll the cutting pattern. You don’t actually have to draw the lines and then cut the card. The picture is strictly to demonstrate the general idea, which is to cut parallel lines from different directions to create a hole that may be easily and greatly expanded.
The main aspect to consider is that the lines near the end of the card are completely enclosed.
There are numerous lines that are parallel to these and other lines that are cut from the opposite direction. And notice that there’s a single cut through the center of the lines at 90 degrees.
In practice, simply fold the playing card in half lengthwise and cut from the fold towards the edge of the cards at the end. And then continue to make additional cuts from the center towards the edge. Be sure to leave room to make a cut in the opposite direction later between these cuts. Remember, the closer together the cuts, the greater you can expand the hole in the card. But the closer the cuts, the more you risk cutting through the edge and destroying the card.
After making several cuts from the fold to the edge, turn the card around and make cuts from the edge towards the center of the card (but don’t cut through the card). These cuts, as you can see in the image, are made in-between the previous cuts that were made from the fold towards the edges.
You can see what this looks like in the next step.
This image shows a card folded in half and cut as described in the previous step.
After you make the cuts, you can make the single cut down the center of the card that runs 90 degrees against the other cuts and through them.
If you’ve made the cuts correctly, you can expand the hole until it’s multiple times larger than the original card. At this point, you can pass a mug or cup through the hole, just as you promised.
Be careful as you expand the hole as the cuts are rather fragile.
If you choose to use a business card, just cut it in the exact same manner. And as mentioned earlier, you can apply the method to a sheet of paper and then step through the hole with your entire body.
You may just have fun with this one.
