However, there are certain small dog breeds which shed considerably less than others.
These breeds will not only make great companions, but they're ideal for living indoors with their limited shedding.
With some small dogs, shedding is more than just a nuisance, it's a serious problem that you should address.
If you or someone in your family suffers from pet allergies, a dog who often sheds can make day-to-day life miserable.

Yorkshire Terriers In 2011, Yorkshire Terriers, or "Yorkies", were the fifth most registered dog breed in the United States.
Because of this, it's safe to say they are one of the most popular breeds with minimal shedding.
At first sight, you may not suspect Yorkies as being a breed that doesn't shed much.
After all, they're hair is typically longer than many other breeds.
However, Yorkies lack an undercoat, meaning they essentially have hair and not fur.
While they're hair can and will still fall out at times, it does so unfrequently, making them a great choice for someone whose looking for a dog that doesn't shed.
Shih Tzu Another type of small dog that seems to have minimal shedding is the Shih Tzu.
These wonderful dogs are loving, loyal, and don't need much grooming.
If you talk to anyone who owns a Shih Tzu, you'll likely find that this hardly ever sheds, except when they lose their puppy coat.
After that, their hair pretty much stays in place.
Boston Terrier Boston Terriers are extremely intelligent small dogs (under 25 lbs) who are known for their short, minimal-shedding coat.
If you get a chance to feel the coat of a Boston Terrier, you'll notice it's almost silky-smooth to the touch.
This means you wont have to worry too much about brushing them, as their hair is already short and smooth.
Miniature Schnauzer With hair longer then most Yorkies, this small dog may not seem like the type that wouldn't shed.
But the Miniature Schnauzer keeps most of their hair attached to their body without falling out.
Still, though, you'll need to frequently pluck their coat to help keep up its appearance.
Owning a small dog is a fun and memorable experience for the family.
However, it can also be a burden for people who suffer from pet allergies.
Small dogs that don't shed can allow you to once again enjoy the companionship and love a loyal canine brings.
