Carriage Driving Training

    Lessons

    • A person cannot train a horse to safely pull a carriage without first knowing how to drive the carriage, so taking carriage driving lessons is a good investment. Lessons should include sessions on harnessing the horse, driving safety, rein handling, use of a carriage whip and voice and rein commands.

    Selecting a Horse

    • Not all horses are suitable for carriage driving. A driving horse should be one that is commonly referred to as "bomb proof." Because driving is considered a dangerous equine activity, a quiet horse is necessary to ensure the safety of the driver and any passengers. It should stand quietly while being harnessed and should not become bothered by traffic or other horses.

    Training the Horse

    • Unless the prospective driver has trained horses for other uses or has a lot of driving experience, working with a trainer is highly recommended. Many breed associations offer driving classes as part of their horse shows; check with them for trainers specializing in driving. The American Driving Society and the Carriage Association of America also keep lists of trainers.
