All over the world, Koi have become one of the most popular types of ornamental fish for ponds.
Their beautiful colors and amusing antics make them enjoyable to observe.
Asagi Koi are a particularly amazing variety of this fish; their unique pattern and interesting history make them truly special.
The Asagi variety is one of the oldest types of Koi.
It is believed that most varieties of the Koi that exist today descended from the Asagi Magoi, a type of wild black carp.
Two mutations, the Konjo and Narumi Asagi directly developed from the Asagi Magoi about 160 years ago.
After that, new types evolved from these two Asagi breeds.
Long before they became popular pond pets, Asagi were used as a food source all over Japan.
Eventually, as Koi increased in popularity, people began to recognize their value and beauty.
This breed of fish is expected to have an appearance that meets very specific guidelines.
The scales should be pale blue on the end closest to the body; as they move outwards, they should become darker blue.
Of course, the more prominent this contrast, the more intriguing and impressive the fish looks.
The scales also form a pattern that looks like a net.
The perfect example of this fish should have a clear white head.
However, this is rare, as most have a blue or gray tint to their head.
Another distinctive feature is the red coloration on the underside of this variety.
These red markings can appear from the lateral line to the underside of the fish, sometimes extending to the gills, mouth, and fins as well.
When choosing an Asagi, it is important to consider many factors.
Younger Koi are usually cheaper, but it is harder to determine how attractive they will be when they are fully developed because their color usually changes as they mature.
Regardless of the age of the Koi one chooses, it is important to look for one with a flawless scale pattern.
Even the slightest blemish in the pattern greatly decreases the value of the fish.
Additionally, it is advisable to choose one with a clear or white nose.
The fish is more likely to develop the desirable pure white head if it possess a clear or white nose.
Koi are a serious investment and live for a long time, so it is essential to find specimens that are pleasing to the eye.
These spectacular fish are a great addition to any pond.
They are beautiful and fun to watch; if properly cared for, Asagi Koi will provide enjoyment for many years.
