I Need Instructions on How to Rekey a Lock
- 1). Insert the wire knob removal tool, which is included in the rekeying kit, into the small hole in the cylinder that sits between the handle knob and the door and pull the knob out of the door. Push on the keyhole in the front of the knob so that the whole lock assembly slides out through the opening in the back of the knob.
- 2). Press the notched-out end of the retainer ring tool, included in the rekeying kit, against the retainer ring on the end of the lock assembly opposite the keyhole until the end of the assembly comes off. Insert the cylinder-shaped plug follower, also included in the rekeying kit, into the opening in the back of the lock assembly and slowly push the lock cylinder out of its housing.
- 3). Turn the lock cylinder so the old pins fall out of their holes. Insert the new pins from the rekeying kit into the holes in the order indicated in the kit's instructions. Slide the lock cylinder back into its housing, pushing the plug follower out the back end.
- 4). Press the retainer ring back onto the back of the lock assembly. Slide the lock assembly back into the back of the doorknob and press the doorknob back into the door until you hear a click.
