Young adults are rarely affected with gingivitis.
However, as we get older, about 90% of us will have to put up with this dental condition.
Gingivitis causes painful, swollen and bleeding gums and can lead to more serious problems, like tooth loss and even heart disease.
But, with good oral hygiene, you can prevent gingivitis from ever occurring.
There are basically two parts to the prevention of gingivitis.
The first is good professional dental care.
Visiting your dentist twice a year for professional cleaning is important.
Professional cleanings can remove much of the plaque that sits on the teeth.
It is the bacteria that make up this plaque that causes gingivitis, so having it professionally removed regularly is very important.
The second part is at home, routine oral hygiene.
Taking good care of your teeth on a daily basis is critical in the fight to prevent gingivitis.
Daily brushing, flossing and the use of a good mouthwash will keep the bacteria off your teeth.
If you practice good oral hygiene throughout your life, you may never have to suffer from gingivitis.
Choosing good products for your daily oral hygiene routine is important.
Natural, mint based products are best.
Certain types of mint oils are anti-bacterial and anti-fungal, so mint makes a great base for all natural toothpastes and mouthwashes.
Plus, with all natural products, you can avoid the artificial ingredients found in commercial toothpastes.
These artificial ingredients can be allergens to some.
So, make certain you're using good products to get the best chance of preventing gingivitis.
All it takes is some education, some diligence and some good oral hygiene products to prevent gingivitis.
Start while you're young, and you may never have to worry about gingivitis or it's more serious cousin, periodontal disease, in your lifetime.
The keys to success in the battle against gum disease and most oral problems are hidden in nature.
Fighting the bacteria that causes the problem is the first place to start and specific species of peppermint and spearmint oils are scientifically tested to be anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-microbial.
