How to Make a Life-Size Scarecrow
- 1). Cut a 2-inch-wide tree branch to about 7 feet tall. Cut another branch to 4 feet long and place it 1 foot down from the top of the 7-foot-tall branch, horizontally so that the two sticks form a cross. Tie twine around the crossing point to secure the horizontal stick in place.
- 2). Dig a 2-inch-wide, 1-foot-deep hole where you want the scare crow to stand and anchor the bottom of the 7-foot-tall stick into the hole. Push the stick down and pack dirt around it until it stands up straight.
- 3). Stuff a pair of old trousers or jeans with tightly-wadded newspaper and leaves to fill out the pants and make them appear as though a person is wearing them. Tie together the bottoms of the pant legs and the waist with twine to keep the stuffing from falling out.
- 4). Unbutton an old shirt and put it on the cross stick so that the horizontal stick goes through the arm holes. Stuff the arms to fill them out and tie the ends of the shirt around the sticks with twine.
- 5). Stand the stuffed pants up against the front of the vertical stick so that the bottoms of the pants are about 1 to 2 inches above the ground. Tie the waist of the pant to the stick with twine.
- 6). Stuff the rest of the shirt and let the bottom of the shirt extend down past the waist of the pants. Tie around the bottom of the shirt with twine. Place gloves on either end of the horizontal sticks and put the bottoms of the pants into an old pair of boots.
- 7). Fill a burlap sack with newspaper, slip it over the top of the vertical stick and tie around the opening of the sack and the stick to secure it. Place a hat on top of the burlap sack to finish the life-sized scarecrow.
