Halloween can be a difficult time for Christian parents. Sometimes Christian children have a hard time understanding how they are different from their secular friends. Throwing a Halloween crafting party is a fun way to combine your Christian motives with a secular spirit of celebration. - Christian jack-o'-lanterns can be just as fun to carvejack-o-lantern image by Trevor Allen from Fotolia.com
Carving Christian symbols into pumpkins provides a way for Christian and non-Christian children to play together and have fun while still taking care to glorify Christ. The older the children involved, the more complex you can make the designs. For younger kids, it is enough to draw the outline of a cross or a Jesus fish with marker on the outside of a few pumpkins and then have the children use a safe pumpkin carving knife to cut it out. Older or more artistically advanced groups can carve the sacred heart of Jesus, Jesus dragging the cross over his shoulder, or even a stylized Jesus with his hands open and ready to bless his flock. When finished carving, drop tea lights or other candles inside the pumpkins. - Candy packs can carry a Christian messagecandy corn image by Greg Pickens from Fotolia.com
Halloween offers a great opportunity to reach out to the children in your neighborhood with a Christian message. Using construction paper and tape, help the kids make palm-sized candy envelopes. Write bible verses or the words of Jesus on one side and "Happy Halloween, Christ Loves You!" on the other side. Fill the envelopes with candy corn or other small packaged candy and then tape them shut. - Saint finger puppets can be used to celebrate a Christian Halloweensaints image by Dubravko Grakalic from Fotolia.com
The word Halloween originally meant the night before All Saint's Day. Have a group of children create finger puppets for their favorite saints in preparation for celebrating All Saints Day. If the children are too young to know any of the saints, pick out a few from a book on saints and make note of fun stories to act out with finger puppets. St. Francis could be depicted with a group of animal finger puppets, helping tend sick animals back to health. St. Christopher, the patron saint of travelers, could assist other traveler finger puppets further along on their path to Christ. Have the kids put on their shows for each other on All Saints Day.
