How to Go on a Low Carb Diet
- 1). Consult a doctor or dietician about your diet plan and your ultimate goal. Consulting a dietician is a great idea to make sure you know what your personal nutrition needs are.
- 2). Research your options. Decide whether you want to go on a predetermined low-carb diet, such as Atkins, or formulate your own using your meal preferences. Factor in other considerations such as the cost of the diets and the benefits of each. Some diet plans, such as The South Beach Diet, have a membership fee.
- 3). Choose your diet plan and determine which foods are low in carbs and which are high in carbs. Most diets will provide a list of allowed foods.
- 4). Start a food journal to monitor what you eat and count your carbohydrate intake.
- 5). Discard any foods you have in the home that will distract you from your diet and replace them with diet-friendly alternatives. Get rid of foods high in simple carbohydrates (refined sugars and starches, for example) and replace them with lean meats, egg whites and vegetables.
