What Would You Do For Your Kids?

Nils Pickert, a writer living in south Germany, took matters into his own hands when people made comments about his son's desire to wear dresses.
Nils and his son had previously lived in Berlin where anything goes, but then they moved to the more conservative south where men yodelling and wearing lederhosen is perfectly acceptable but a dress isn't.
So Nils put on a skirt when he took his son into town, to show anyone who was looking that his lad's behaviour got his approval, and vice versa.
This got me thinking, what's the best thing I have done, and more to the point, would do, for my kids? Well, the first part was relatively easy - have them in the first place.
I must admit I was a reluctant dad and was brought to the table kicking and screaming.
I didn't want to give up my independence and was worried about being able to cope financially.
Yep, I was scared.
Now, one miscarriage and two sprogs later and I'm still scared but coping.
Every day is an adventure and a brilliant one at that, but I still have my Indiana Jones moments when one of them flings themselves off the side of the sofa onto a waiting set of cutlery below.
Maybe we need better definitions? What's the most supportive thing I've done? I guess it would be 'stayed around when things got tough between me and the Dearest Wife'.
I'm not saying that I deserve a medal just for turning up every day and I'm not condemning anyone who calls time on a failing relationship, I just know that I could have walked and I'm proud that we worked at it and kept going.
What's the most daring thing I've done? Maybe it was January 1 this year when I declared myself a writer.
For 12 months I'd been pretending to be something I wasn't and I'd been 'difficult to live with' because of it.
This year I decided to be true to myself and I'm being far more successful and far happier which has led to a better relationship with all members of the family.
Fortunately we've had no great battles to fight when it comes to our kids - the issues like money worries have all been behind the scenes.
I just asked Liam what the best thing I've done for him was, and he was more bothered that I'd squeezed him too much when giving him a hug and he was going downstairs to tell mummy.
So I'll list the things that my kids do for me and why I'm determined to become financially independent so I can spend as much time with them as I want: smiles, cuddles, huggles, belly laughs, trampolines, football, slides, swings, chasing around the garden, questions I can't answer, answers I can't believe, looking at them when they sleep, crazy bath times, sandcastles, swimming, Saskia feeding me her breakfast, Saskia nicking food off my plate...
I could go on for ever, but I've got two children to chase around the garden.
Which skirt should I wear?
