Inspect the Hoses

• Inspect the pool hose that extends from the filter. These hoses can crack and leak, causing a drop in filter pressure and circulation. Take this time to insect the filter connections that go from the skimmer to the pump and from the filter to the pool's return. If any part of the filter components are leaking or are cracked, this can cause the filter to lose pressure built up inside the tank, which will result in a loss of circulation.
  
  

Clear the Baskets

• One of the most common causes of low circulation problems in your swimming pool come from a blocked entryway to the filter. On most filter systems there will be a skimmer basket and pump basket that can both get clogged with leaves and other large pieces of debris. The basket is there to block these large items and pieces of debris from entering the filter system. Empty the skimmer and pump the baskets free of dirt and debris before restarting the filter.
  
  

Backwash

• The pressure gauge on your filter will indicate when it needs to be cleaned. Diatomaceous Earth and sand filter systems are cleaned through the process of backwashing. Pool owners need to backwash when their pressure gauge rises eight to ten psi above the normal reading, which means the filter is dirty, increasing the pressure inside the filter tank and blocking proper water circulation. You will notice the flow of water from the pool's return jet has slowed down as a result.
  
  

Clean the Cartridge

• Cartridge filters that are dirty can also lead to circulation problems in a swimming pool. Unlike the diatomaceous and sand filters, the cartridge filter system is cleaned by removing the filter cartridge from the filter housing. The pressure gauge will indicate when the cartridge needs to be cleaned. You will also see the return jet flow decrease as a sign as well. The cartridges should be cleaned about once per month or as necessary and indicated by the pressure gauge.
