    • 1). Compare notes with your date. When you show up at the prom you want to announce yourself as a couple, so find out as much information as you can about her dress. A swatch of fabric or a short description of the dress will help you match the color and style, and prevent you from showing up looking like two people who have never met.

    • 2). Select your vest. The vest helps you maintain that sleek look even after you take your coat off. It's also a chance to give your tux a little splash of color and add some personality to your look. Traditionally, your vest should match your tie. If you plan to spend a lot of time on the dance floor, opt for the full-backed vest that gives you the option of taking your jacket off. The backless vest means you'll be wearing your jacket all evening.

    • 3). Purchase your jacket. Whether you go for a double-breasted of single-breasted tux jacket, the fit is the most important thing. If you're small-framed, a single breast might work better with slender lapels, and the sleeves should come just below the wrist with your arms at your sides. Larger body types should try a double-breasted jacket with a peak lapel, but avoid shoulder pads.

    • 4). Find the right tuxedo shirt. This is when attention to detail is very important. A regular laydown collar with french cuffs is an understated, elegant look and can be worn with a bowtie or straight tie. The crosswick and mandarin collars don't require ties, and have no collar fold over flaps. The wing collar is the ulitimate in classic style and will gaurantee that you make a formal statement. If you do choose a french cuff shirt, you'll need cuff links.

    • 5). Buy your pants. The color will depend on your jacket. Check that the hem of your pants fall just above the tops of your shoes and angle slightly downwards in the front. If you choose black pants, always wear them with black shoes and socks. Getting the ideal fit for formal pants means your waistline will be even with your navel.
