Christmas Themes with Crafts, Cabins, Toys, and Sports

If you live in a city, you might long for a Christmas holiday in the country, mountains, or at a cozy cabin away from the hustle and bustle. Dream of log fires, family games, and lazy days. Choose one of these fun themes wherever you find yourself.

The sports themes are especially fun for a small tree in a child's room or a family room where children will be playing. Choose one special sport or gather together things from all the interests.

  • Western Cabin
Go for a walk in the woods and collect pine cones, seed pods, colorful leaves, and dried berries. Find ornaments of cowboy hats, leather vests, cowboy boots, a small fishing boat and fish, twig furniture, and small forest animals like squirrels, moose, or bear.

  • Country
Hang small woven baskets with fabric ribbons. Use hammered tin ornaments, tie raffia bows, fill mini bird nests with wooden fruit, tie twigs in small bundles to set on branches, and hang tiny bird houses on branches.

  • Quilts
Use small blocks of quilting patterns, stretched on small embroidery hoops to hang on branches. Find quilt-patterned ornaments or cover styrofoam balls with calico quilt scraps. Tuck an old quilt around the base for a tree skirt and cover a side table or use one on the dining table to carry the theme throughout the house.
  • Birdhouses
Collect realistic feathery birds, tiny birdhouses, handmade bird nests, and other natural decorations. Embellish with pinecones and clusters of colorful leaves. Add a garland of feathers, raffia or leaves.

  • Forest
Let the beauty of the tree be the center of attention. Embellish with dried leaves, acorns, pine ones, wooden carved ornaments, and rusted animal decorations. Keep everything toned down and natural.
  • Farmhouse
This is a fun theme for a young child's room. Find ornaments, preferably wood, of barnyard animals like pigs, horses, and cows. Tie up some small bundles of wheat or bales of hay and add a garland of raffia or tiny painted fencing.
  • Calico
Using scraps of colorful calico fabric, cover styrofoam forms, tie bows, and wrap tiny packages to tie onto a tree or wreath.
  • Vintage Tools
Hang rusted old tools to decorate a wreath or tree in a guy's workroom, den, or home office. Use twigs, raffia, or rusted wire, dotted with rusted stars, for a garland.
  • Old World
Find charming old vintage Christmas ornaments at flea markets or antique stores. Follow the history of Christmas decorations with designs from different periods and countries.

  • Collectibles
Showcase your collections of vintage kitchenware, dolls, teddy bears, or birdhouses. Wire them securely to your tree and embellish with garlands and ribbons.
  • Sports Themes
Choose your child's (or child at heart!) favorite sport for a decorating theme. Hang ornaments shaped like a tennis racquet and balls and wrap the tree in a garland of 2" wide burlap ribbon. Use replicas of soccer balls, basketballs, baseballs, running shoes, golf clubs, or surfing supplies. Focus on one sport or display all the child's interests on one tree.
  • Teddy Bears
Collect mini teddy bears, small wicker furniture, bear-sized hats and clothing, mittens, and pieces from a child's tea party set.
  • Toys
Collect ornaments or make them to duplicate your child's favorite toys, books, and hobbies. Mini books, cars, rubber duckies, dolls, paint brushes, and crayons can all be hung on a tree or wreath.
