It is during the first 12 months of your baby's life that changes are taking place in leaps and bounds.
It is at this stage that most parents can hone the mental ability and development of their little one.
This can easily be done with the use of baby toys.
However, you cannot just up and buy any toy.
One of the major things that you need to consider is the age of your baby.
Since the vision of a newborn baby is not yet as strong as those of an adult, you might want to consider giving him or her toys such as crib mobiles that feature bright colors.
Make sure, however, that these toys are positioned at least 6 inches from their face so that they can see it.
You can also try letting your baby play with the mirror.
Do not leave your baby unattended though as the mirror could break and cause injury.
As your baby's vision grows, you can start reading to him or her using story books with large, brightly colored pictures.
Your baby might also start grabbing hold of things that are within their reach.
This means that you might want to include baby rattles as one of their toys.
You might notice that, at some point, your baby would start banging on their rattles.
This is actually their way of learning cause and effect.
Along with your baby's tendency to grab things within their reach, they are also most likely to put things into their mouth.
Since this is the case, your best move would be to get toys that are chewable.
This means, you might want to go for brightly colored teethers.
At this point, you might also choose to give your little one some musical toy.
You might start with a hammer that produces specific sounds or toys that produce musical notes when pushed.
When your baby is already 6 months old, stacking toys as well as action/reaction toys might prove to be useful.
It is because it is at this stage that your little one is already honing his analytical skills.
He would already be able to follow cause-and-effect relationships and would also be able to find hidden objects.
By the time that your baby is a year to a year and a half of age, your baby would already know how to plan things.
He or she would also be able to show a more appropriate response to toys such as hugging stuffed toys and pressing buttons.
At this stage, you can already introduce battery-powered toys to your little one as well as ride-ons and push and pull toys.
Since they are also already honing their fine motor skills, electronic toys and even video games that encourage eye and hand motor coordination may also be introduced.
Finding the right toy for your baby need not be very hard as majority of toys today already come with age labels indicating which age the concerned toy is most appropriate for.
