How do I Clean a D.E. Pool Filter?
- 1). Turn off the pool filter and unplug it from the electrical source. Many pool filters are set on a timer, unplugging it will prevent the timer from turning on while you're cleaning it.
- 2). Switch all hose valves to the "Off" position. If you don't have hose valves connecting the hoses to the filter, then you'll have to disconnect the hoses from the filter. Starting with the return hose, disconnect it from the filter and place the open end in the pool. Next disconnect the skimmer hose from the pump basket and place it in the pool also. This prevents the water from rushing out of the pool onto the ground.
- 3). Open the drain off valve on the filter housing. This will allow water that's sitting in the DE filter housing to drain off. Make sure to open the filter air valve to allow the water to flow freely.
- 4). Remove the DE filter. In order to access the filter, you must open the filter housing. Some filter housings are secured by a large ring while others require the loosening of nuts and bolts. Check with the manufacturer's instructions on how to access the DE filter for your system.
- 5). Rinse the DE filter with a garden hose. Turn the hose nozzle to the strongest setting to remove some of the more difficult-to-clean dirt from the filter.
- 6). Wash out the inside of the pool filter housing. There may be leftover diatomaceous earth and dirty water sitting in the bottom of the filter housing. Wash it all out with the hose so that it won't flow back into the pool.
- 7). Place the DE filter back into the filter housing and secure it shut.
- 8). Turn the hose valves on or reattach the pool hoses. If you're reattaching the hoses, connect the return hose first, and then connect the hose from the skimmer. Secure them tightly to prevent leaking.
- 9). Plug in the filter and turn it on.

Add new diatomaceous earth through the skimmer basket. Check manufacturer's recommendations to determine the right amount of DE to add to your filter.
