More than 27 million people play fantasy sports each year, according to the Fantasy Sports Trade Association. Many of those people are probably playing fantasy baseball, an annual ritual that comes around each spring. But is Yahoo!'s entry into fantasy baseball a homerun for iPhone users?

App crashes are a problem

Yahoo! has an active fantasy baseball community, and its free iPhone app allows users to edit lineups, view score updates, and check standings. To use the app, you’ll need to create a free Yahoo! account and either create your own league or join a league on the Yahoo! fantasy baseball site. Registering is fast and easy.

Since I don’t play fantasy baseball, I turned to the fantasy sports fanatics who have posted reviews on iTunes and Yahoo! to get the lowdown on the Yahoo! app. It's clear that most of these reviewers have a lot of experience with fantasy baseball and know their stuff. So what are they saying about this fantasy baseball iPhone app?

Like most apps, there are pros and cons. A number of users say it’s perfect for checking information on the go when you can’t get to a computer. Since the Yahoo! Fantasy app is free, it won’t cost you anything to check it out, and many users say it is easy to edit your lineup directly from your iPhone.

Users also think the 2011 app is improved over last year's version, which was knocked for its limited functionality and constant crashes.

The new Yahoo! Fantasy Baseball 2011 is better, according to reviews, but still not perfect. The crashing problem is a thing of the past, but users still wish for more functionality, including push notifications and better draft support.

The Bottom Line

If you use the Yahoo! Fantasy Baseball website, it can’t hurt to download the corresponding iPhone app to see how it works for you. It is free, after all. Yahoo has rectified the crashing problems that plagued last year's version, but users would still like to see more functionality, especially draft support. Overall rating: 3 stars out of 5.

What You’ll Need

The Yahoo! Fantasy Baseball app is compatible with the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. You’ll need iPhone OS 4.0 or later, in addition to a free Yahoo! account.
