How to Design Leather Bags

    • 1). Consider purpose. Purpose will help to dictate the size of your bag. Think about the kinds of things you will be putting in the leather bag. Will it be an overnight bag? A laptop case? Just an evening clutch? These questions are crucial as you begin designing your first bag.

    • 2). Consider functionality. If you want something more avant-garde, you can go crazy with the design. Add details such as buckles or tassels without worry. If it is more practical, think about the lines of the bag. A straight rectangular or square bag will be much more practical than one that is more strange in shape.

    • 3). Consider closures. Is your bag going to zip shut? Will it have a flip-over top? The bag's closure is a large part of its design. Some slouch bags merely meet at the top and flip over on itself, making for easy closure.

    • 4). Consider straps. Do you want the bag to sit on your shoulder or be slung across your body? The way you want to carry your bag will also determine exactly how long and what kind of straps you will be looking at. Thicker straps are best for larger bags, while thinner straps are good for clutches and small leather bags.

    • 5). Draw out your idea with a pencil and paper. You may also want to go to fabric stores and check out leather swatches for the kind of bag you want.
