Creative Photography is about controlling wide range of settings and understanding what they will do.
Depth of Field is a significant visual tool for creative photography.
It allows photographers to capture eye moving images.
Depth of field can be thought of as "which area is in focus and which is not".
For example an image displaying combination of blurred surroundings and a sharp focused area is a product of this technique.
Large or maximum "DOF" will capture larger area in focus.
Applying maximum depth-of-field will display objects at a wide range of distances to all be in focus at the same time.
Shallow "DOF" will isolate a portion of the photograph and blur the surrounding area.
What DOF technique will do for your images? - Quickly draw viewer's attention to the desired point.
- Blur your background or foreground; get your subject in focus or out of focus.
How to Control It? One method is the use of lock-focus setting.
If you are shooting wide scenery, you can target a foreground object and press the shutter release button half-way down.
Your camera will lock the focus then you can reposition your camera and shoot.
You will capture a blurred background and a sharp foreground object.
Using focus-lock method you can you set the focus points right on center, to the right, front, back and so on.
Once you lock your focus you can reposition your camera and shoot.
What factors are involved? • Aperture / f-stop setting • Focal Length • Camera to subject /object distance Aperture / f-stop Smaller f-stops capture larger areas in focus (allowing objects at a wide range of distances to all be in focus at the same time) Larger f-stops capture a shallow area in focus (displaying the background out of focus) Focal Length The wider the lens angle coverage, the more depth of field is produced.
Using a telephoto lens for example, depth of field becomes shallow.
Camera to subject /object distance The greater the distance between the camera and the subject the more Depth-of-Field there will be.
Manipulating your focus settings is a powerful method for creative photography and great tool for creative visual effects.
Applying the "depth of field" technique will definitely add to your creative photography skills.
