NBC news viewers encouraged to switch to palm oil to support heart health
Farmers' market season is here, making available the freshest summer produce. This is also a good time to do something good for your heart health. NBC 9 News' Colorado viewers recently learned which farm-fresh foods should be on their shopping lists. Best-selling author and former host of TLC's Honey, We're Killing the Kids Dr. Felicia Stoler also told them why non-GMO Malaysian red palm oil, may be our hearts' best friend.
"Our heart is that muscle that we need for the rest of our lives. We have to take really good care of it," Stoler began, adding that "A lot of [older] people regret that they didn't take better care of their health." There are many things we know about nutrition that can help us live healthier, longer lives.
Improving the way we care for our hearts may be as simple as changing our cooking oil. "We know thatolive oil is great, part of the Mediterranean diet," Stoler agreed. "Something that's also equally as important is getting something called Malaysian palm fruit oil … It's naturally trans fat–free and you can see from the beautiful color, it's loaded with beta carotene. It's nature's richest source of a particular type of vitamin E called tocotrienols, which are neuro-protective," Stoler explained. These nutrients allow palm oil to support both heart and brain health
It is best to use olive oil for salad dressings, or after the food has already been cooked. For grilling, sautéing, barbequing or even baking, palm oil's high smoke point makes it an excellent alternative.
Stoler also had a few recommendations for less conventional ways to use Malaysian red palm oil, which remains a semi-solid at room temperature: "You can use this in place of mayonnaise over the summer in your salads, which is really important with the heat and food safety as far as a potato salad or a pasta salad."
Palm oil is derived from the flesh of the fruit of the oil palm species E. Guineensis. In its virgin form, the oil is bright orange-red due to the high content of carotene. Palm oil is Nature's Gift to Malaysia, and Malaysia's to the World.
Palm oil is semi-solid at room temperature; a characteristic brought about by its approx. 50 percent saturation level. Palm oil (and its products) has good resistance to oxidation and heat at prolonged elevated temperatures; hence, making palm oil an ideal ingredient in frying oil blends. Manufacturers and end-users around the world incorporate high percentages of palm oil in their frying oil blends for both performance and economic reasons.
In fact, in many instances, palm oil has been used as 100 percent replacement for traditional hydrogenated seed oils such as soybean oil and canola. Products fried in palm oil include potato chips, french fries, doughnuts, Ramen noodles and nuts.
