Care of Synthetic Wigs
- The most important thing to remember about synthetic wigs is to be sure to use the right kind of cleaning product. You will need combs, brushes, shampoos, conditioners and styling products specially formulated for synthetic wigs. If you don't, your wig will not last long or look as nice as it could.
- Washing a wig will shorten its life, so keep that in mind if you wear wigs often. First, gently brush your wig with a wig-friendly brush. Fill up a bowl or basin with cold water and shampoo the wig with the proper shampoo, made for synthetic wigs. Be gentle with your wig, as rough handling will create split ends and dull the strands.
Wash synthetic wigs about every 10 to 12 wearings. Take into consideration how often you wear your wig and how much styling product you use. Depending on the buildup of body oils, sweat and styling products, you may need to wash your wig less or more often. - Synthetic wigs can be styled with an array of products. Some can even be trimmed or cut to create a custom look. You should not, however, ever use any heated styling devices such as curling irons, flatirons or hot rollers. The wig fibers could frizz or even melt, which would ruin your synthetic wig. You can use sponge rollers, Velcro rollers or rag curlers instead, if you would like to add curls to your wig.
- You can store dry wigs in plastic bags or on Styrofoam heads, but do not use Styrofoam heads to dry the wig. This can stretch your wig cap out of shape and it will not fit properly anymore. Wet wigs can be laid on towels to dry overnight or can be placed on a folding wig stand which helps the wig dry faster.
