A man wakes up and seems disoriented to be in a jungle. A yellow Labrador Retriever runs by. The man tries to get his bearings and sees the dog again. The man stands, checks his pockets and finds a small vodka bottle. He stumbles through the jungle a short ways and comes upon a beautiful beach.

He hears sounds, slowly at first.

People are screaming and crying. He stops a moment to take it all in: plane wreckage, fire, people running back and forth, a pregnant woman yelling for help, and overall mass hysteria.

The man collects himself and quickly runs into the middle of the confusion and begins helping people. He immediately takes a leadership role and gives orders to those around him. He tells them his name is Jack.

Jack Gets Sewn Back Together

When people are, for the most part, calmed down and their immediate needs cared for, Jack rummages through scattered luggage and sneaks into the woods with a sewing kit. He checks the deep gashes in his back and threads a needle. A woman comes into the clearing rubbing her wrists, looking startled to see Jack. He asks if she's ever sewn before and begs for her help. He tells her that he is a doctor, but that he can't stitch his own back. Reluctantly, the woman, who introduces herself as Kate, begins to sew Jack's wounds closed.

While she sews, he tells her a story. "When I was in residency, my first solo procedure was a spinal surgery on a 16-year-old kid.

A girl. And at the end, after 13 hours, I was closing her up and I accidentally ripped her dural sack. It's at the base of the spine where all the nerves come together. Membrane as thin as tissue, and it ripped open. Nerves just spilled out of her like angel hair pasta, spinal fluid flowing out of her and the terror was just so crazy, so real and I knew I had to deal with it. So I just made a choce. I'd let the fear in, let it take over, let it do it's thing. But only for five seconds, that's all I was gonna give it. So I started to count. One, two, three, four, five. And it was gone. I went back to work, sewed her up and she was fine."

Jack and Kate head back to the beach where the survivors are doing their best to figure out what to do next. A man named Sayid introduces himself to a man named Charlie. Charlie and Sayid begin to build a bonfire to signal rescuers.

The Next Step for the Survivors

Hurley rummages through the plane and gathers up as much food as he can find and begins doling it out amongst the survivors. Michael checks on his son, Walt.

Jack sees that both the back and the front of the plane are missing. He tells Kate the front of the plane must be somewhere on the beach and that if they can find it, they might be able to use the transceiver to radio for help. Kate saw smoke in the jungle and tells Jack that she will go with him to find the front of the plane.

Something in the Jungle

Suddenly the survivors hear a hideous howl that sounds like a very large animal. They all stop and gaze into the jungle, but see nothing other than shaking trees. "Terrific," Charlie says.
The sound goes on for several seconds, but eventually goes away, leaving everyone even more scared than they already were.

Jack's Flashback of the Plane Crash

Jack is on the plane and is served a drink, then given two small vodka bottles, which he puts in his jacket pocket. He talks to the woman next to him who says that her husband is in the bathroom. As the plane goes down, Jack reaches for his oxygen mask.

The Pilot

The survivors do their best to settle down on the beach for the night. The next day, Jack and Kate set off into the jungle to find the front of the plane. Charlie invites himself to come along. Jack is all business, leading the way, while Kate and Charlie are more chatty. Kate says she is sure that she knows Charlie from somewhere, but just can't place him. Charlie smiles and hums a tune. When Kate looks confused, he explains that he is the bassist for DriveShaft. Kate is impressed and Jack is impatient at their talking.

At the crash site, a sudden rainstorm sends the survivors to find cover wherever they can. They are terrified to hear the strange howling again.

Jack, Kate, and Charlie find the front of the plane in the jungle and climb in. It looks like there are no survivors and they make their way to the front. The pilot, still strapped into his seat, looks dead, but suddenly starts to move. They give him water and explain that it has been 16 hours since the crash and that at least 48 people have survived.
