How to Cover a Window
- 1). Assess your room's needs. Decide whether you want to lighten or darken the room. If the room is too bright, choose a room-darkening window covering. If it is too dark, sheers or blinds that can be opened to let light into the room may be a good choice. If the room is being used as a studio, you will need a lot of light. However, if it is used as a media room, then you will want it to be dark. There are draperies and shades that come with or without a room darkening lining.
- 2). Acquire a catalog if you want to purchase ready-made draperies or blinds. You will find all kinds of choices in a catalog with photos that will show you which blinds and draperies look best in different room settings. Choose a room that looks similar to yours and make a selection from the colors and styles available that best matches your room's decor.
- 3). Go to a home supply store where ready-made blinds are sold if you have oddly shaped windows. Blinds are relatively inexpensive and can be cut to fit virtually any size window. If your windows are in an odd place in the room, make them look larger and more centered by hanging drapery panels on the either side of the window frame.
Draperies are good for living rooms with large picture windows and bedrooms because they give the room a more elegant look.
Blinds are more contemporary and are best used in a kitchen, a bay window or a bathroom. They can usually be wiped clean should something spill on them, and they don't hang on the floor where kids and pets can pull on them. - 4). Hire an interior designer or someone who specializes in and sews window treatments if you can't decide on window coverings. A professional will come to your home, assess the room's needs for you and help you decide whether draperies, shades or blinds will be the best window covering choice for the space.
