How to Install a Recessed Shower Shelf
- 1). Choose a place to install the recessed shower shelf. Place a stud finder flat against the wall to verify there is no stud or piping in this area. Mark the spot with a pen.
- 2). Tape the template for the shelf on the shower wall with painter's tape. Place a level on the template to make sure it is even. If there is no template, place the front of the shelf flat against the wall, and draw an outline of it onto the tile or surround. Create a smaller outline within the larger one that is 1 inch shorter in length and width. Use the smaller outline as the cutting guide; erase the larger outline.
- 3). Drill a pilot hole in the middle of the template or outline with a power hand drill.
- 4). Insert a 4-inch diamond grinder into the pilot hole. Use medium pressure to cut the tiles or surround within the template or outline.
- 5). Set the back of the recessed shelf within the hole to make sure it fits properly. Trim away more of the tile or surround, if the hole isn't quite big enough.
- 6). Bead the perimeter of the hole and the back side of the shelf with acrylic adhesive silicone.
- 7). Fit the shelf into the wall before the adhesive dries. Wipe away any excess adhesive with a damp cloth.
- 8). Hold the front of the shelf to the tile or surround with duct tape. Leave the tape in place until the adhesive is completely dry.
