How to Classify Asthma
Asthma is defined as a chronic inflammatory disease of the airways.
It is a chronic obtrusive condition.
Clinically speaking it is classified on the basis of frequency of symptoms.
Though it is classified based on the severity of the attack, the sub types of this classification cannot be marked yet.
This is the major thrust of the research in the field of asthma now.
As being able to determine the sub groups will greatly help in its cure because even though the symptoms might be same, the treatment differs.
It is also classified on the basis of forced expiratory value in 1 second (FEV1) and peak expiratory flow rate.
That is one way, in another way it can be classified into extrinsic and intrinsic.
This classification is based on whether the symptoms are a result of allergens or not.
If an asthmatic attack is triggered by allergens the kind of asthma is defined as extrinsic or atopic asthma and if the attack is not triggered by allergens then it is defined as intrinsic or non atopic asthma.
While talking about classification of asthma, we might need to know what brittle asthma is.
It includes two types of asthma both severe and recurring.
Type1 brittle asthma refers to the kind of asthma with wide peak flow variability in spite of intense and high medications.
While type2 refers to the background well-controlled asthma with sudden and severe exacerbations.
Next is the type, Status asthmaticus.
This kind refers to an acute exacerbation of asthma that does not respond to standard treatment.
Use of beta blocker medications, one of the causes of asthma have resulted in fatal causes in this type.
Asthma as a result of workplace exposures, excessive work strain and acute pressure is defined as Occupational asthma.
In the present day scenario, most of the cases of occupational asthma are not reported and in some cases are not even recognizes as such.
These are some of the common and major types of asthma.
But this field is still active in research and it would not be a surprise if many more kind are detected later with time.
