Overview of Neonatal Lupus
Overview of Neonatal Lupus
The range of NL presentation has expanded beyond the area of skin and cardiac findings. This expansion points to the importance of follow-up of these patients with rheumatology, dermatology, and possibly cardiology. SLE is prevalent in women of childbearing age, including teenagers. Teens diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder should be made aware of possible pregnancy outcomes when the conversation begins regarding sexual activity. It is now known that NL is no longer limited to cutaneous or cardiac findings. Further research is needed to provide more answers into the cause of NL, and most importantly, a therapeutic regimen to regress or reverse third-degree heart block. Continuity of care should be the focus between the inpatient provider and the primary care practitioner who will continue to provide optimal care to the newborn.
