How to Alter Large Shirts

    • 1). Turn both T-shirts inside out. Place the T-shirt that fits you on top of the larger one, using the T-shirt that fits as a template. Be sure to align the neck and top portion of each shirt. Pin the T-shirts in place.

    • 2). Trace the sides of the template shirt onto the larger T-shirt. Continue the lines past the template T-shirt if you would like a longer shirt.

    • 3). Fold the template T-shirt at the sleeve and shoulder seam so that the sleeve is not visible. The shape will, in most cases, be a slight curve. Trace this curve on both sides of the larger shirt.

    • 4). Measure a one inch seam allowance on all sides. Use your ruler to measure out one inch from each side of the shirt, and mark that with the tailor's chalk.

    • 5). Remove the pins and the template T-shirt. Cut along the seam allowance marks you made on the shirt you are altering.

    • 6). Set the body of your shirt to the side. Line up the sleeves of the template shirt with the sleeves of the T-shirt, which will usually have been cut off as part of the excess. Make sure the hems at the ends of the sleeves line up.

    • 7). Draw an outline of the sleeve. Mark off an extra one inch around the sleeve for seam allowances. Cut the sleeves out.

    • 8). Pin the sleeves to the body of the T-shirt with the "wrong" sides facing outward. Sew the sleeves to the armholes.

    • 9). Pin the sides of the shirt together. Sew the sides carefully, following the lines you marked earlier.

Fold the bottom of the shirt upwards onto the "wrong" side of the fabric. Sew a hem around the bottom of the shirt.

Turn the shirt the right way out and try it on. Make any necessary adjustments.
