How to Change the Brakes on a 2005 Sienna
- 1). Park the Toyota on a flat surface. Turn the engine off and place the transmission in "Park."
- 2). Loosen the lug nuts on the wheels on which you'll be changing the brakes. Give each lug one full turn with the lug wrench, but do not remove the lug nuts.
- 3). Place the jack under the frame of the Sienna. Raise the vehicle so the tires are at least 3 inches off the ground. Place jack stands under the axles to support the Sienna.
- 4). Remove the lug nuts and take the wheels off.
- 5). Unscrew the two caliper slide bolts on the back side of the caliper with a 13 mm wrench. For front brakes, remove the caliper and rest it above the steering arm For rear brakes, suspend the caliper above the wheel hub with a bungee cord.
- 6). Pry the brake pads from the caliper brackets with a flat-head screwdriver.
- 7). Remove the two caliper bracket bolts with a 15 mm wrench. Remove the caliper bracket from the rotor and set it aside.
- 8). Remove the rotor from the Sienna's wheel bolts. Grab the disc on both sides and pull it straight off the wheel hub.
- 9). Clean the new brake rotor with brake-parts cleaner and a clean cloth towel. Remove all of the excess cleaner as well as the packing oil from the surfaces of the rotor.
- 10
Place the new rotor on the wheel bolts. - 11
Replace the caliper bracket on the new rotor. Screw in the bracket's bolts with the 15 mm wrench. - 12
Retrieve the caliper from above the brake assembly. Open the brake bleed valve with a 10 mm wrench. The valve is located on the caliper between the two caliper slide bolt slots. Place a drip pan or other container under the caliper to capture brake fluid leaking from the valve. - 13
Place a C-clamp over the caliper and caliper piston. Squeeze the piston into the side of the caliper. Remove the clamp once the piston is fully opened. Close the brake bleed valve with the 10 mm wrench. - 14
Apply brake grease to the back side of the new brake pads and slide them into the slots of the Sienna's caliper bracket. - 15
Place the caliper over the new brake pads and screw in the caliper slide bolts with the 13 mm wrench. - 16
Replace the wheel on the Sienna's wheel bolts and screw on the lugs by hand. - 17
Lift the Sienna with the jack. Remove the jack stands from beneath the axles. Lower the vehicle's tires to the ground. Tighten the lug nuts with the lug wrench. - 18
Repeat the process for each set of brakes on the Sienna. - 19
Start the engine. Press the brake pedal repeatedly until the pedal response stiffens. Pull the hood-release lever located under the driver's side dashboard and move to the front of the Sienna. - 20
Lift the hood and remove the master cylinder cap. The cap is in the back of the engine compartment, to the right of the Sienna's engine. - 21
Place a funnel in the reservoir and fill it with brake fluid as necessary. Remove the funnel and replace the maser cylinder cap. - 22
Close the Sienna's hood.
