Changing Fashion

• The eruption of World War II changed the fashion scene for women during the 1940s. Fabric shortages within the clothing industry combined with the need for women to work outside the home during war time played a huge part in changing the world of female fashion. For example, clothing companies began re-cutting men's suits into women's suits. The shoulder padding in men's suits were left in for women's suits, creating a whole new style. Shoulder padding was not only used in women's suits, but in other garments as well. This trend continued to gain popularity until 1949.
  
  

Coupon Fashion

• Due to the shortages induced by World War II, women had to use coupons to buy new clothes, cloth, footwear or knitting wool. These government-issued coupons were handed out at the beginning of the year and had to last until the end of the year. In 1941, women were given 66 coupons to use. By 1945, that number had dropped to 36 coupons a year. The government created rules for coupon use. For example, coupons could only be detached from the coupon book during the time of sale. Despite the coupons, some women were still too poor to afford new clothes.
  
  

War Time

• Women who joined the armed services during World War II were given specific suits to wear. Former Secretary of State Colin Powell's wife, Alma Powell, commented to NPR that these service uniforms for women could not be too revealing or make the females look too attractive. The service uniforms, such as the ones worn by women in the WAC (Women's Army Corps) consisted of a khaki jacket and skirt. According to Powell, this style made the women look trim and professional.
