What Is A Gummy Bear Breast Implant?

Silicone gel and saline implants have been the two types of breast implants approved for use in the United States. However, the FDA pulled silicone gel implants from the market in 1992 because of all the safety issues raised regarding silicone leakages and the resulting bad publicity. Fourteen years later, in 2006 the FDA finally approved the unrestricted use of silicone gel implants.

Today, there is a new implant dominating the American news – the cohesive gel. How does it differ from the other two implants? Why is it called the Gummy Bear implant?

If you hold a saline or silicone gel implant in your hand, you will see what looks like a sack filled with liquid. Picture in your mind a water balloon – a smooth shell filled with liquid that sloshes around as the shell moves. A saline implant is smaller, because it is not filled with the saline solution until after the implant is inserted into the breast. It will leave a smaller scar since it is not filled with saline until after the implant is in place. A silicone gel implant is filled prior to insertion in the breast, which means it will require a larger incision and leave a larger scar.

The new Gummy Bear implant is totally different. It looks like a giant, round shaped Gummy Bear – a solid material with a gummy gel texture. Although it does have an outer shell, it is not filled with liquid. If you cut this implant in half with a knife, you would have two solid objects. There is nothing whatsoever to leak out. Therefore, you have a firmer, solid implant without a safety issue of leakage.

The traditional silicone gel implant is often called cohesive, but the term should not be applied to it. Yes, technically speaking a silicone gel is cohesive to some degree. However, it is not cohesive enough to form a solid mass – the silicone gel is still liquid. Therefore, the term cohesive should only refer to a Gummy Bear implant, which is a solid mass of material without a liquid filling.

If you are a resident of the United States and wish to have the new Gummy Bear implants, you have a formidable task ahead of you. You must find a plastic surgeon who is approved by the FDA to participate in their current clinical trials. Unfortunately, there are only a handful of these surgeons across the country. This will be the case for years to come, until the FDA determines the overall safety of the implant and approves it for unrestricted use.

There are only three types of patients eligible to participate in the FDAs clinical study: those having breast reconstruction, first time augmentation, and breast augmentation revision. Study patients have to agree to routine follow-up appointments usually for a period of ten years. This means you will probably want to live in close proximity to the qualified surgeon.

If you are interested in learning more about Gummy Bear implants, seek out a board-certified plastic surgeon who specializes in breast augmentation.
