    Government Organization Grant Eligibility

    • City, local and state governments are all eligible for federal grants. Special district governments such as Washington D.C. qualify for government grants. Native American tribal governments, both federally recognized and those that are not federally recognized, qualify for grants designated for government organizations.

    Educational Organization Grant Eligibility

    • Independent public schools that cater to grades one through 12 are eligible to receive grants and do so on a regular basis. Public colleges, including those controlled by individual states, are also eligible for grants designated for use by educational organizations. Private colleges and universities are also eligible for federal grants.

    Small Business Grant Eligibility

    • Small businesses qualify for grants from the federal government based on size and industry. Most industries have size standards preset by the Federal Small Business Administration. All federal agencies follow the standards determined by the SBA when determining eligibility for grants.

    Other Organization Grant Eligibility

    • Few other organizations qualify for grants from the federal government. Public housing authorities and Indian housing authorities receive and qualify for grants. Non-profit organizations may also qualify for grants from the government whether they are registered as a 501(c)(3) organization with the Internal Revenue Service or not, as long as they are not an institution of higher learning.

    Student Grant Eligibility

    • Students who are citizens of the United States may qualify for federal grants to attend colleges or universities. These grants are often based on the financial need of the student. Other grants are given to students based on their grade point average and their course of study. These grants can require repayment if students do not complete the course of study, submit to their agreed upon contract for work in the field their grant was for, or if they withdraw from school before completing a percentage of the semester. This percentage varies and will be prorated until the student owes nothing if they stay long enough.
