Stop Dog Barking With Anti Bark Collars

Does your dog bark excessively? By this I mean that your pet doesn't seem to know when to stop barking.
First you must know that for dogs to bark is normal and natural.
They bark to warn away intruders, human or animal.
That is normal behaviour.
But if your dog just keeps on and on barking, then it is down to you to correct his or her behaviour.
Never shout at your dog, or show frustration, but rather give him a gentle prod on the side of the neck with your fingers and say "No" firmly, but calmly.
This is simply to distract him and break his fixation with barking.
Always be consistent and follow through with your correction.
Stand over your dog and hold his attention by focusing on him.
Think of a stern school teacher waiting for a pupil to cease chatting.
If your dog shows any sign that he or she is about to start up again, then follow through with another "No" command.
Just your command alone should be enough the second time if you are still holding your dog's attention, and he's just starting to drift back to his fixation.
If not, again give that sudden but gentle little prod to the side of his neck at the same time as repeating your "No" command.
Remember this prod is not an attack, it is a "Hey You" to your dog.
Like I say, don't give up, be consistent, and follow through.
However, your dog may be barking when you are absent, and this could be causing problems.
Dogs do suffer separation anxiety, some breeds more than others.
So try not to leave your dog alone for more than about three hours.
If you can, leave your pet with family or friends if you're going to be much longer than that.
It helps greatly to give your dog a good brisk walk for at least 30 to 45 minutes before you leave him or her.
This will help your dog to relax when you are out.
To keep your dog occupied while absent try leaving him a hollowed out sturdy bone from your butcher's - he will do this for you if you ask nicely.
Fill it with something your dog likes, such as peanut butter.
This treat should be frozen before giving it to your dog, so it will take him longer to get the delicious center.
Alternatively you could purchase a Kong Dog Toy, which are designed for this purpose.
You may feel you still need extra help to stop dog barking when it is inappropriate, in other words excessive barking.
So you may wish to look at a little outside help by purchasing an anti dog bark collar.
When choosing an anti bark collar there are basically three kinds available.
The first kind is the Static Shock Collar.
These are controversial because they give your dog a small static electric shock when it detects dog barking.
I for one do not approve of this method at all.
What dog lover wants to teach his or her pet by electrocuting it? Apparently, the shock level can be increased in increments.
I believe the makers of such devices should be given a similar treatment and see how they like it! The second type is the Ultrasonic Anti Dog Bark Collar.
This collar as the name suggest uses high frequency sound which is activated by your dog barking.
The sound it emits be heard only by the dog.
It doesn't hurt the dog's hearing at all, but is irritating.
Your dog will quickly learn that this undesirable sound results from his or her barking.
You can also get a free standing or wall mountable version of the ultrasonic training system.
Depending on which company you choose, these have a range of 8 metres, 15 metres or 25 metres, which makes them good for gardens or yards, or a room inside your home.
These can also be used if you have problem with a neighbour's dog barking, if it is within range of the device.
Then there is the third type - the Citronella Anti Dog Bark Collar.
These collars can sense whenever your dog is barking, and respond by emitting a gentle citrus spray, which helps break your dog's barking cycle, by distracting him and deterring your dog from further barking.
These are completely harmless, and this type of collar seems to be favoured amongst dog owners.
If you do decide to try for an Anti Dog Bark Collar, try one the Citronella types first, and in this authors view, never use the shock type of collar.
Primrose, Petsafe and Innotek are three examples of companies that supply anti bark collars and free standing or wall mountable devices to help stop dog barking.
