Marriage Wedding Theme: A Lasting Marriage

What could be a more romantic wedding theme than celebrating long-lasting love? This theme can be both incredibly sentimental and funny. You can incorporate it in almost every part of your wedding in a meaningful way.

Ceremony:

Seek readings on long-lasting love and the art of marriage, such as this one, used in Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward's wedding. (They've just celebrated their golden 50th anniversary!)

Ask a favorite couple to speak for a few moments about the art of marriage, their advice to make it work, or their hopes for you.

While this couple can be family or friends, ideally it will be people who have been together for at least 15 years.

Have the officiant ask your guests to promise to support your relationship, strengthening it whenever possible.

Reception Décor

Name your tables after traditional anniversary presents such as paper, cotton, leather, fruit, bronze, pottery, silver, or gold. You can also incorporate the name into the centerpieces. For example, the Paper table might feature folding cranes, or vases wrapped in decorative paper. For Fruit, use a giant pile of perfect lemons in lieu of flowers, or have a florist mix wired fruits with more traditional stems.. Pottery, of course, calls for a fantastic handcrafted jug instead of a vase.

During the dancing, do a couples dance. The DJ will get everyone on the dance floor, then ask for only those who have been together at least a year to stay dancing. Then he gradually increases this number, so that by the end, only the longest-lasting couple is still on the dance floor.

The brand new couple should present this long-lasting couple with a bouquet of flowers, or another trinket of congratulations.

Display the wedding photos of loved ones with happy marriages. Although many people show the wedding pictures of their parents and grandparents, you can expand on this idea. Include a note in the invitations or save-the-dates that reads, "If you have a happy marriage or long-lasting relationship, we'd love to have a picture of the two of you for a display at our reception. Ideally this will be a wedding or commitment ceremony photo, but any picture showing your love for one another will be great to have." Guests will love looking at all the different pictures, picking out those they know and love.

Flowers

Use the traditional meanings of flowers to create your bouquets and boutonnieres. Use flowers that signify important qualities for a happy marriage, then include a note in your wedding programs explaining their significance. Find wedding flowers in season.

Music

Take your guests on a journey through time. Start the evening off with classical music for the cocktail hour and then jazz standards for dinner. When dancing begins have the DJ mix in "golden oldies" which will get both young and old up on their feet. Gradually switch to more contemporary music. Typically the older crowd leaves first anyway, and your friends will be happy to shake a leg late into the evening. Reception Music to Get Wedding Guests Dancing.

Favors

Give guests a book of Pablo Neruda love poetry, or a cute book such as I Like You.
