How to Camp in the California Wine Country
- 1). Decide on an area of focus. Napa Valley and Sonoma are great base camps if you would like to explore the northern wine regions. Napa hosts five campgrounds within 25 miles of the town center. Santa Barbara county, with areas like Lodi and Los Olivos (of "Sideways" fame), is a great choice in the Central Valley. Every year the Lodi Spring Wine Show takes place with wine tastings, food and live music. There are 13 campgrounds within 25 miles of the fairgrounds to choose from.
- 2). Research campgrounds online. Are you camping in a tent or an RV? Campgrounds can range from as primitive as a water pump to full service parks with amenities like pools, showers, stores and entertainment. Consider factors such as distance to wineries, privacy and cost.
- 3). Make a reservation. California is a year-round tourist destination and campgrounds fill up quickly. Reservations can be made online or via telephone. Often you can reserve your spot from a map of the grounds.
- 4). Prepare for the weather. What makes California a prime location for growing grapes are the warm days and cool nights, especially in coastal areas. Rain can be a factor, so if tent camping bring a ground cloth and rain tarp.
- 5). Consider transportation options. Leave the car or RV at camp and tour wine country by bike. Get a map of the area and ask your host for the best route to travel by bike. Tours are available by private car or shared shuttle that will pick you up, drive you to nearby wineries and return you safely back to camp.
- 6). While touring the wineries, stock up on snacks. Many wineries also sell their own olive oils, meats and cheeses. Wineries often offer a discount on bottles purchased. Keep in mind how much you want to carry if walking or riding a back. Bring a good, sturdy backpack.
- 7). Check with the local tourism office or your camp host for nearby activities, such as hiking trails or fishing spots. Many campgrounds are located on or nearby lakes and rivers.
- 8). Enjoy a good night's sleep under the stars with a belly full of good wine and food. Wake up and repeat.
