How to Hook Up an Electrical Fan With Lights
- 1). Purchase a lighting kit that matches the style of the fan and the amount of light needed for the space.
- 2). Make sure the power is turned off at the breaker panel to the room where the work is needed. Test that the room is without power with a lamp that can be turned off and on with a wall switch.
- 3). Remove the fan cover next to the pull string on the underside of the fan housing. There will be black and white wires within the fan or in a snap clip attached to the fan assembly. Expose and straighten the wires while twisting the ends into a neat coil.
- 4). Connect the black wires of the fan with the black wires of the lighting fixture. Twist wire nuts over the black wires until tight. Connect the white wires of the fan with the white wires of the lighting fixture; then twist wire nuts over the white wires until tight. Connect the clip of wires within the lighting fixture--the clips will only connect one way. Attach the lighting fixture to the fan with the screws provided. Finish the assembly by attaching glassware to the lighting fixture and guiding the pull chains through the holes within the new fixture.
- 5). Insert compact fluorescent light bulbs into the new lighting fixture. Then turn the power to the room back on at the breaker panel. Check to see that the fan and lights function correctly.
