Types of Fuel for Coleman Lanterns
- Coleman is a camping and outdoor equipment manufacturer headquartered in Wichita, Kansas. The company is a subsidiary of the retailing conglomerate Jarden, based out of Rye, New York. Portable lanterns and lamps have been manufactured by the Coleman company since 1900. Over that the time, the company's products have been powered by numerous fuels.
- Coleman currently markets six lanterns that are powered by the company's own fuel blend called "Coleman Liquid Fuel." Coleman fuel is comprised of solvent naphtha and aliphatic petroleum distillates. The company's brand of "Duel Fuel" lanterns are capable of running on both Coleman Fuel and unleaded gasoline (although not simultaneously.) Coleman Liquid Fuel lanterns include the "Classic 1" and "Heritage." Duel fuel lantern include the "Powerhouse," "North Star" and "Premium" models.
- Four lanterns manufactured by Coleman operate on propane gas. Propane is a portable and relatively inexpensive liquid fuel. These include the "Deluxe," "Elite," "Pinnacle" and a propane version of the "North Star." The company markets 16.4-oz cylinders of propane fuel as part of an "InstaStart" package. A portable propane powered torch, the "FireLight" is also available. Coleman also produced a wide variety of propane transportation containers and accessories.
- Over two dozen Coleman lantern products are powered by batteries, far and away encompassing the majority of lanterns manufactured by the company. Coleman battery-powered lanterns run on a variety of battery combinations. These include 4A, 4AA, 4D, 8D and CR123A Lithium batteries. The Coleman "Quad" lantern, which runs on 4D batteries for approximately 75 hours, was given an Editors Choice award by "CampingLife" magazine.
- Improper use of liquid or gas fuels could cause serious injury or even death. Always consult your lantern's documentation thoroughly or ask an outdoor professional prior to ignition. Never mix fuels. Keep all fuel sources away from children. Never leave lanterns unattended.
