Grants for Auxiliary Power Units
- The California Air Resources Board provides grants, loans and guarantees for cleaner trucks and equipment, including APUs. Fleet size categories ranging from 14,000 to 33,000 pounds or more determine funding for trucks and transportation refrigerator units. To get funding information you must provide information on the percent of time operating in California, age of fleet and percent of time operating in nonattainment air quality districts.
- The Ohio Environmental Council is tasked with administering the Environmental Protection Agency's Clean Diesel Initiative that provides grants for idle reduction technologies. Grants are allocated to public agencies overseeing air quality and transportation programs as well as public and nonprofit institutions that use fleet trucks. In FY 2011, $32 million funded various technologies, including independent power sources for air conditioning and heat. Funding is contingent upon annual appropriations.
- The Federal Highway Administration and Federal Transit Administration jointly oversee grants for the reduction of truck emissions. The Safe Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Act distributes funds to state transit agencies based on a formula using population and EPA air-quality classifications; $9 billion has been distributed since 2005. Auxiliary power units for fleets are eligible for grants, but continued funding is contingent upon federal appropriations.
- State transit agencies are the first place to contact regarding auxiliary power unit grants. Federal appropriations typically continue from year to year, although the funding levels may change. Contacting your state transit authority will keep you in the loop regarding upcoming grant opportunities for auxiliary power units as well as other useful information for your trucking fleet.
