Your CV and Personal History - How to Make it an Absolute Winner!
You must bear in mind that you are a 'product or service in a market place'.
So your CV is your marketing tool, and as such it needs to provide you with the best possible document to highlight you in the best possible light! You will quite often encounter 'Application Forms' too, and although many of the principles are the same for completing them, I include further advice in a separate article.
This is such a big topic that whole books have been written on the subject so I am sure you will appreciate that I can't possibly do justice to it this briefly! There are dozens of excellent books either at the Library or in Book Stores, and as long as you shop around a bit and get a respected author and a reasonably up to date book this should help enormously.
Do Remember what the job of the CV is! People often consider that its purpose is to get you a Job.
Well, if you consider things clearly then: • The CV gets you into an INTERVIEW! • The Interview gets you into A JOB OFFER! • Always remember the distinction, it important! So, I would like to give you a 'kick - start' by way of some background which is based on dealing with literally thousands of people - all of whom had a CV, and on many occasions anything from one to six variation of it! • Remember - the prospective Employer wants to know what the BENEFITS of employing you are likely to be.
He or she often decides very quickly on first impressions.
• So, remember 'the 30 Second Rule'.
Although it's not always true and doesn't sound very fair a large portion of the people who read CV s often only give you 30 seconds to 'make your first impression'.
• You must consider targeting your CV for each Job and situation.
So make sure you thoroughly review every Job Advertisement, (and Job Description and Person Specification if you have those too).
• Always be prepared to vary, tweak, and even re-design your CV in the light of this.
If you don't take the trouble to do this, then frankly I don't consider you are taking your Job Search seriously! As I mentioned previously I have worked with clients who have as many as 6 'variations' of their CV to suit different scenarios! These all tell the 'truth' but are slanted with different emphasis to fit with individual Employers needs and requirements! • Remember these key points about constructing your CV: -Brief Personal Details, Name, address, contact details -Suitable heading or Profile matching briefly how you fit the Job -Skills, experience, qualifications, and very important achievements -How long should it be, sometime 1, ideally 2 pages only! -Good quality white paper, printed on 1 side only and 'spell checked' -To list experience; usually in Reverse date order and mainly last 10 years -Always think of the reader first, and what makes it easier for them to read and understand quickly -Don't leave unexplained gaps in dates and don't lie or make up qualifications you don't have.
In my experience you always get caught out! -Put in briefly, hobbies and interests, best ones linked somehow to work At the end of the day, the more effort you put in at this stage, the earlier your reward! Refer; http://www.
