It would not be inappropriate to mention 'no hormone no acne'. It is for the physician to confirm that the values are high and find the source of production. Hormonal therapy has now become an option for treatment when acne is not responding to conventional therapy. An endocrine work-up is indicated in the presence of hyperandrogenism signs. This should minimally consist of an assessment of DHEA-S, total and free testosterone levels, and an LH/FSH ratio. Women with normal serum androgen levels also respond well to hormonal treatment, although its main indication is hyperandrogenism. Finally, one should not forget hyperandrogenism in men.
