Apple delivers all its updates through iTunes, so the first thing you should confirm is that you have the most recent version of it on your personal computer. To update the iTunes, go to the Help menu and click on Check for Updates.

If you get a notification that you have the most recent version, then you are all set to step two. In case if you get a notification that latest version is available to download, then download it first to stay updated. Accept every prompt that is necessary to install the updated software. Apple suggests additional software like Safari browser that are not necessary to download. You can download them if you like, but they have no use in updating iTunes.

Once you download the update, the installation will automatically will get started. After the successful installation, you have to restart your computer to run the new version. Now you will have to review and accept the license agreement of the new software to launch it.
Now open the iTunes and connect your phone to the computer using USB cable. You will see that the necessary drivers will get installed automatically. After the driver installation, iTunes will recognize your iPhone. iTunes will begin the backup and syncing your phone automatically or you can do it manually.

Now double click on the iPhone icon of the iTunes screen on the left side menu to open the summary screen. In the middle of the screen you will find a section called Version. It tells you which version is currently running and if update are available it will show you a notification for updates. If it shows a button called €Check for Updates€ that means you have to update it manually.

Now you will see a pop-up from iTunes that will notify you that it is about to update the software and that will be verified the update with Apple. Your next step is to click "Update" again to continue. iTunes will show you the new features available and hardware require to continue. If you have the compatible hardware click the prompts to move forward.
Once the iTunes show your end-user license agreement for the new version as of iOS, read the terms and conditions carefully and then click €Agree€. After accepting the agreement iTunes will start downloading the software and you will get a message in the middle of the screen that software is downloading. When the downloading is complete you will find that iTunes starts extracting the software and you will get another message that Preparing for Updates. It takes a few minutes for the installation, please do not disconnect your iPhone during this process.

You will get another message that Updating the iPhone's firmware. When the process is complete iTunes disconnect your phone and reconnect it automatically, so fast that you may not even notice.
