It's not just flowers anymore: Couple them with lip smacking cakes
15 million Indians reside elsewhere. Far, far away from the sea of friends and family who celebrate their birthdays, anniversaries and festivals with only a fleeting thought about their sons and daughters living in a remote, downtown apartment in London, New York or Berlin. Pre Y2K, it was next to impossible to be accessible to them in such times of joy as someone's birthday (phone calls were a lengthy process which involved going to a Public Call Office as there were no mobile phones then and call tariffs were exorbitantly high)
Post Y2K though, a new medium of expressing ourselves emerged. India embraced the idea of e-commerce and life was never the same again. In the e-commerce span, a new segment took shape which has served a lot of folks like us and will continue to do so. Floral deliveries at your doorsteps was made possible by a host of e-florists who started vying for your clicks and wallets, in the process, giving shape to the online gifting solution segment in the country. Once there was a medium to send flowers to India, a consumer set evolved around the segment which only grew as the rate of outward migration from Indians came to an all time high in the past decade.
I have been hooked to this medium since the very beginning as I have always been pro-gifting. Gifts were an integral part of my lifestyle and I believed in their power because I had seen the momentary pleasure of handling a ribbon-wrapped gift package drive out all the stresses of the day. Flowers, typically, were a quick, surefire gift which cannot go wrong unless your order is placed with a shady florist who does not know his trade. I always made sure that I read some reviews beforehand while placing the orders.
Now there is another gifting mode which has got me excited. Birthdays which are my most savoured occasions with my family back in India, got sweeter, as florists in India have now started cake deliveries at your home. Earlier, I was just restricted to flowers but now I can couple them with cakes to go with the occasion. Most of the florists have both egg well as eggless cakes in their inventory and this would be the proverbial icing on the cake J
Cakes and flowers delivery, made possible, because of the ever expanding e-commerce segment. More power to the tubes and clicks!
