Walls and Floors

• 1). Paint your walls in colors of country style blue or yellow or softer versions of greens, pinks or reds and get the whole family together to paint a mural with farm animals or a field of flowers and butterflies. Even if you are not an artistic group, this can be done easily with stencils, or use a projector to display the desired design on the wall, and then all you have to do is paint between the lines.
  
  
• 2). Put 3D decorations on the walls to add elements of surprise and depth when decorating your basement family room. For example, attach a few decorative country birdhouses on top of where the poles are painted in the murals or on treetop branches.
  
  
• 3). Choose soft carpet that is comfortable for kids to sit on, if you are able to redo the flooring, in a hue that complements the colors of your walls. If you are stuck with another type of harder flooring, bring in plush area rugs to place in the seating areas.
  
  

Furniture Choices

• 1). Buy a comfy overstuffed couch and chairs that match the interior design style. If you have to work with existing furniture, use slip covers, decorative throws and plush pillows to bring in softness and country colors.
  
  
• 2). Bring in a larger coffee table and a few end tables in lighter wood tones to keep it bright. Paint older dark furniture a crisp white and add a few country designs with stencils if you wish.
  
  
• 3). Find other furniture pieces, such as your entertainment center, in the same wood tones or paint them to match as well. Place a card or game table in your basement family room for fun nights at home.
  
  

Decor and Accessories

• 1). Add country artwork and other decorating accessories around the room. Family basement rooms tend to have lower ceilings, so hang a shelf around the top of the room to display collectibles, games and books.
  
  
• 2). Bring in baskets to hold smaller items such as remote controls, CDs and DVDs. They can even be placed up on your shelving to house materials for fun activities such as crayons, game pieces and cards.
  
  
• 3). Bring life into your decorating design with plants, no matter how much natural light your basement family room gets.. The University of Minnesota Morris states that, even when "light levels in our homes are too low to support the sturdy growth necessary for many indoor plants. Don't give up, there are some beautiful foliage plants that will do quite well under these conditions." Choices include the sansevieria (snake plant), aspidistra (cast-iron plant), Rochford holly fern, Kentia palm and the parlor palm, as well as the air fern--which literally survives off nothing but air so there's no need for sunlight or even water.
