How to Get Rust Off of Chains
- 1). Scrub off any surface rust with a steel wool pad or old toothbrush to reach tight areas.
- 2). Put on rubber gloves. Pour a commercial rust remover onto the steel wool pad. Apply the solvent to the rust on the chains. The acids in rust removers dissolve the rust after 10 to 15 minutes.
- 3). Wipe the chain clean with paper towels.
- 4). Apply a primer to the chains with a paintbrush. This primer prevents any further rusting by providing a protective layer against moisture or water.
- 5). Let the primer dry completely before using the chains.
