Teens Without Vaccines
Teens Without Vaccines
This was a random-digit dialing telephone survey, and the households surveyed had at least 1 adolescent aged 13-17 years. After collection of telephone information, the immunization providers identified by the parents were contacted. The sample was weighted to calculate national estimates of the measurements collected. Parents were asked whether a provider had ever recommended that their teen receive the 3 vaccines -- Tdap/Td, meningococcal meningitis conjugate (MCV4), and HPV -- either combined or separately.
For teens who had not been vaccinated according to current recommendations, parents were asked to give the primary reason that their teen was not up to date on these 3 vaccines. For HPV, any teen who received fewer than 3 doses was considered not up to date, and parents were asked about their intention to have their teen vaccinated against HPV. Parents who reported that they were "not likely at all" or "not too likely" were asked, using open-ended questions, why they did not plan to have their teen vaccinated against HPV. Parents could provide as many reasons as they wished. Only the responses related to girls were included in the analysis.
