    • 1). Make sure your floor is relatively flat. Fill any low areas with a leveling compound. You can purchase this at any home improvement store.

    • 2). Start along a long exterior wall. Make a mark 1/4 inch away from the wall at each end. Use a chalk line to mark a line on the floor between the two marks. Use this line to lay your first row of planks.

    • 3). Spread enough glue to install one or two rows at a time. This will prevent the glue from starting to set up before flooring has been installed.

    • 4). Note that the flooring has two distinct sides, one with a groove and one with a tongue. The tongue and groove sides are mated together to provide a uniform fit and to prevent cracks between the rows of boards. The ends of the boards are also installed the same way. Place the groove side of the board to be installed over the tongue of the already installed board and push together, using a beater block and a hammer. Then, tap the free end of the board to snap the other end in place. Make a beater block from a small piece of the flooring. The block should be about 6 inches long and have the groove side intact.

    • 5). Start installing the flooring along the long wall. Place the first board on the floor, starting in a corner. Place the groove side along the guide line from Step 2 with the grooved end facing the side wall. Cut small pieces of flooring as spacers and place them between the wall/baseboard and the piece of flooring. Continue doing this with each successive board until you reach the other end of the wall. Stagger the joints on consecutive rows. Avoid joints closer than 8 inches to another joint on neighboring rows.

    • 6). Use a beater block for pieces that don't want to close up properly. Place the beater block next to the strip plank being installed and tap it with a hammer until the piece locks in place. Place the groove side around the tongue of the installed board and hit the backside of the beater board block with the hammer. This will protect the tongue from damage.

    • 7). Cut the wood using a miter saw and a table saw or a jig saw. Jig saws can be used indoors and allow you to make cuts where you need them and not have to keep running to the saw.

    • 8). Clean up any glue that gets on the surface of the flooring immediately.

    • 9). Once the flooring is laid, install the molding or baseboards.
