Types of Tubal Ligation
- Larascopic tubal ligation is the most common method used when performing a tubal ligation. This procedure is performed by making two or three small incisions in the abdominal area in order to allow medical instruments access to the fallopian tubes. The tubes are cauterized and either sealed shut or closed with a plastic clip or ring.
- A tubal ligation can also be performed right after a vaginal childbirth using only one small incision near the naval or through an incision inside the vagina.
- Women who are having a cesarean birth can elect to have a tubal ligation done before the doctor closes up the C-section incision.
- Sometimes a woman may decide at a later date that she wants another child and elect to have a tubal reversal. Tubal reversals are very difficult and have a low rate of success.
- If a pregnancy does occur after the procedure, it may be an ectopic pregnancy, which requires surgical intervention and can be life-threatening.
