Letting children work in the kitchen makes learning fun, according to the Nemours Foundation's Kids Health. For preschoolers, preparing food allows them to feel helpful. Older children learn about healthy eating and improve their measurement skills. There are simple recipes that kids can make on their own, or with minimal adult assistance. - This is a treat for older kids who can handle a pointed skewer. Use a variety of fruits, cut into small pieces, and work with your child to slide the fruit onto the skewers. Kids Health suggests rolling finished kabobs in yogurt and coconut.
- This simple recipe is appropriate for kids of all ages, and provides a new way to eat yogurt and help your child get enough calcium. Work with your young child, or supervise your older child. Pour yogurt into small paper cups and insert craft sticks into the cups. According to Kids Health, covering the cups with plastic wrap before inserting the craft sticks helps keep the sticks standing straight. Place the cups in the freezer until frozen, then peel off the paper and plastic to eat your yogurt pops. You may want to get creative and use several colors in layers.
- Select a variety of foods such as cereal, nuts, dried fruits, small crackers and pretzels. This is an opportunity for older children to practice measuring skills, for example, "add 1 cup of raisins," and for younger children to practice counting skills, such as "add 15 pretzels." After you have added all the ingredients, mix them together and enjoy, or put your snack in a bag and save it for a nature walk or long car trip.
- Use mini bagels or English muffins for crust, and allow your child to create her own pizza with sauce, cheese and toppings. According to Kids Health, these pizzas cook for five to eight minutes at 325 degrees. Be sure to supervise your child when opening and closing the oven. If your oven has a window, your child will know the pizzas are ready when the cheese starts to bubble.
